To the Engineers…

23 01 2011

We seldom ask what it is that makes our lives better. We seldom ask that what it is we should live for. But then, we seldom ask questions. But let’s ask ourselves this today. What is it that makes our lives better? What is it that improves people’s lives? Is it money? Nah. You cannot eat money or stuff money into your car to get it to run. Is it the government and politics? Nope. All they do is propose budgets, make laws and declare war. Is it religion? Of course not. Religion does nothing. Except provide intangible solace for those who require it. No, the only thing that has ever improved people’s standard of living and made their lives easier is Technology.

What is Technology? Technology is a pencil, that lets you solidify ideas on paper. Technology is an automobile, that lets you travel faster than feet would allow. Technology is all around us. From ceiling fans to power plants to computers. Technology is the only tangible thing that has improved the standard of living of humans ever since the first human walked on earth. It is Technology that solves the problems mankind faces. From providing light in the nighttime to preventing buildings from collapsing due to earthquakes to traveling faster than the speed of sound.

We, as engineers, have been trained in Technology. We are supposed to be at the forefront of technology and, through it, at the forefront in solving the problems mankind faces today.

It is sad to see what people think of engineering today. They are told that engineering is a ladder to success. It is portrayed as a ladder to become rich. They are told that if they study engineering in an IIT they can get into a better B-School or do PhD abroad or get a high pay job. Do they realize why? Do they realize why engineers are valued thus? It is because engineers are the only people that have been trained in tackling the problems of the world. They are the puzzle-solvers of the human world.

The problem is that the engineers don’t realize this. I live in a campus containing around 2500 engineers and to-be engineers and never, in 4 years of living here, have I come across a single one who so much as talks of solving the problems of the human race.

Part of the problem lies in our lifestyles. Usually, engineering students get their laptops in the beginning of their period of study. What then? It is a nonstop marathon of movies, games, soaps, sports, and other forms of entertainment. The problem is that the “entertainment industry” has grown so large that people have forgotten what entertainment is supposed to be about. Entertainment is what you pursue when you get time out of doing the “actual” work. But right now, people are so engrossed in entertainment that they don’t believe there is anything else worthwhile in the world. Consequently, we have a whole “industry” that just produces entertainment.

Wake up my fellow engineers. You are the ones who are supposed to take the human race to a standard of living so high that even millionaires today cannot imagine such luxury. When you realize the knowledge and the potential you have, you will sit and wonder at how distracted you were that you could not see the possibilities of an intelligent race that is known as the Homo Sapien. For it is you, who will, through technology, solve problems like the energy crisis and climate variability, and then, through technology, improve our standard of living, like automation of boring jobs, producing abundance of food, eradicating diseases, and thus, building a system that is sustainable and efficient and environment-friendly.

A new awareness is required. A new lifestyle is needed. A renewed effort is called for. For it is a new future that awaits us. A future of prosperity, for all people.

good one… :)

but sorry to say… you are wrong. Scientists are the puzzle solvers. Engineers are the people who implement research papers!!

ok u keep implementing research papers then :)

right, i always knew i wanted to be a scientist and not an engineer.

seriously. is that the only thing you got out of the whole post? disappointing.

well said . But you get it wrong . In the sense that people who come to IIT “want” to become engineers. Lots of people don’t come to IIT with the spirit of technology, puzzle solving, they dont see the awesomeness of the everyday things they use. the amazing potential of internet or for that matter anything. The society(our parents) and ultimately we think about money/ honour(izzat) and a stable life. Can;t u see that IIT represents the safest choice of life. One wherein you are bound to get a decent earning, a good after-college life and a social standing.
This is the only reason why most of us persue MBA blah blah. And its not the student;s choice. Its engraved in our nature.
ex : You come to say some IIT, take up chemical eng/ cs/ chemistry and well you do it because if you don’t, you wont get good grades/ job etc.etc. when you don’t like what u do, you end up doing all this other stuff, mba etc. Infact ‘half’ the people wanting to go abroad for MS/PHd, are the ones who really want to learn/ solve problems. And its only half of them. I have seen people who didnt get good jobs do MS because they didnt get a high pay job. Till there is a change in attitude ( which wont occur anyways for a very very very long time), IITs will never prosper the way they should have. Real research wont happen at IITs atleast the amount that was expected.
I say it again, IIT is not about technology, IIT is not about problem solving, it is not about engineering. IIT have been the safe way of living as our parents have said ” beta iit main admission lele, bas life set ho jaegi” .. and THIS STATEMENT SAYS IT ALL .

I am a bit confused about your comment. Did you want to become an engineer when you came to IIT? Or do you follow what your parents taught you and see IITs as a safe way to get a good living? I can’t figure out what your exact orientation is. Please elaborate :)

Also, this post does not only relate to IITs and their so called ‘prestige’. This post talks about engineering, and by that I mean that when you say that you are an engineer, you do not add that you are from IIT. Its not about the prestige of being enroled in an IIT. Its about the prestige of being an engineer.

I came because I like what I do. Its been in me from school times when I realized my orientation. And perhaps I will remain an engineer
BUT its not about me.You talk about people of IIT ( in your ‘engineers’ are god stuff ) . I just want you to not forget why ‘some’ people come to IIT. Its not always the ‘engineering’ they come for. They did not “”"choose”"” their branch/ their discipline / their “WORK”. The JEE ranks chooses a person’s discipline. A good job giving branch chooses a person;s discipline. How pathetic :/.

rest (This post talks about engineering….) of it is really inspiring .. rather looked a lot fundebazzi to me. But hell you wrote it, who am i to say anything.

God you’re still going on about IITs and branches and what not. Didn’t I just say I don’t care about fuckin’ IIT. I only care about engineering and how it matters to the world. So please keep your frustration to yourself.

interesting :)
the general emotion that’s invoked the post is heartening to see, although (and rohusk’s humour touched upon this too) the terms / definitions used are a little loose. even so, good to see you express thus.

Actually, no. rohusk’s point can be refuted by the fact that engineers write research papers as well.

errr…. I really liked the post, infact provoking
but Pranav, dnt u think u r becoming little harsh while replying
to the comments?

That’s just because I’m fed up of my fellow “IIT”ians (notice the quotes).
